World Diabetes Day, recognized annually on November 14th, is the world's largest diabetes awareness campaign. According to the International Diabetes Foundation, approximately 573 million people are living with diabetes around the globe. The theme for World Diabetes Day 2024 is "Diabetes and well-being" which highlights the importance of access to critical diabetic care in conjunction with achieving physical, emotional, and mental well-being. The following nonprofits are doing the critical work to raise awareness, assist those living with diabetes to access supplies and medication, and educate the public about diabetes with the ultimate goal of finding a cure.

American Diabetes Association

Founded in 1940, the American Diabetes Association (ADA) is the nation's leading voluntary health organization whose mission is to prevent and cure diabetes, and to improve the lives of all people affected by diabetes. The ADA drives discovery by funding research to treat, manage and prevent all types of diabetes, as well as to search for cures; raises voice to the urgency of the diabetes epidemic; and works to safeguard policies and programs that protect people with diabetes. In addition, the ADA supports people living with diabetes, those at risk of developing diabetes, and the health care professionals who serve them through information and programs that can improve health outcomes and quality of life.

Diabetes Action Research and Education Foundation

Since 1990, the Diabetes Action Research and Education Foundation has been committed to the prevention and treatment of diabetes by funding promising research aimed at finding a cure for type 1 and type 2 diabetes and their complications. With a consistently low overhead and a small, dedicated staff, Diabetes Action has received top ratings from organizations such as Charity Watch, Charity Navigator, and the Better Business Bureau Wise Giving Alliance. Diabetes Action has provided grants to hundreds of researchers at universities and medical institutions across the United States and has made great strides in finding innovative solutions to prevent, treat, and cure diabetes.

Diabetes Research Institute Foundation, Inc.

The Mission of the Diabetes Research Institute Foundation is to provide the Diabetes Research Institute with funding necessary to cure diabetes now.

We are a non-profit led by people with and impacted by type 1 diabetes for people with type 1 diabetes. We believe in a world where everyone with type 1 diabetes – no matter where they live – has everything they need to survive and achieve their dreams. We support local communities by giving them the tools they need to stand up for their rights so that access to insulin and diabetes supplies becomes a reality for all.It is our priority to be able to speak out and push for change, so we do not accept money from pharmaceutical companies or any other body that we feel might influence our ability to do this. We will always be transparent about where our money comes from and what we spend it on.

Insulin for Life USA Inc

To provide free of charge insulin and disease management supplies to those with diabetes who otherwise would go without these life saving provisions. In short, the organization collects in date, unopened, supplies from individuals or organizations in the USA and, following careful inspection, delivers them to disadvantaged regions to be utilized by those in need. IFL-USA is fully licensed by the State of Florida to both receive and distribute medications for this purpose, and is insured for its activities. All donations to the organization are tax deductible in accordance with regulations.
